A Rainbow with Wings
April 13, 2018
Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? Matthew 6:26-27
Five years ago my husband and I moved from a townhouse into a single family home on Innerarity Island, surrounded by beautiful oak trees and many native plants. Not long after moving in, I innocently hung a bird feeder outside the kitchen window. It was the month of April, and what I did not know then, spring migration time. Within a few days, the birds had discovered the feeder. We were amazed at the variety that came to feed, and have since become avid birders. The beauty of these migratory birds is astounding. With my binoculars I can see the detail God sculpted and the colors he painted in each little winged creation. I feel so blessed and overwhelmed to witness His magnificence in this way.
I believe it pleases God when we appreciate His creation. I also believe He likes to “wow” us sometimes. Over the past five years I have logged 78 species of birds in our backyard. However, there was that one bird that kept eluding me, until just this week, and in typical God fashion, the timing was perfect.
I have a friend whose son is going through a difficult time. The situation is causing a great deal of stress for the entire family and it looks dire in her eyes. She asked me to pray for her son. While I was doing so (and praying for her as well), I looked out the window and saw it – an adult male Painted Bunting…. wow, God, just, WOW! He looked like a rainbow with wings. A rainbow – God’s promise of love and a covenant to never leave us, especially during the storms of this life. When I told my friend about the Painted Bunting and how I was convinced God had placed that beautiful little bird in front of my eyes while I was praying for her son, she began to cry. She knows. No matter the outcome of the situation, the Lord is with her and her son – always!
